Road safety mobile apps

Since 2005, Road Safety Day, launched by the German Road Safety Council (DVR), has taken place every year under a different motto. In 2021, the focus will be on rural roads, because most people die on them every year. With these three apps, not only drivers can get through traffic safer, they won’t have to get help from a semi towing truck company when accidents happen.

While driving, however, the rule is: Stay away from the phone!

“ADAC is it running?!”

The app “Läuft’s?!”, which was launched this year and is provided by the ADAC, is aimed not only at motorists but also at all road users. Currently, the service is available in five federal states and two city-states, namely Bavaria, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt as well as Bremen, and Hamburg. The app is a defect reporter, users can use it to anonymously report defects in road traffic. ADAC employees process the reports and forward them to the responsible authorities. Gradually, deficiencies such as potholes, illegible or misleading signage, poor accessibility, or lighting could soon be a thing of the past. “It’s running” is available free of charge for Android and iOS.

“German Road Safety”

Together with the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV), the DVR itself provides the “German Road Safety” app. As a goal of the application, the developers state on their website “that refugees also know the most important traffic signs, apply elementary traffic rules and can thus move more safely on roads, cycle paths or footpaths.” But the creators of the app also want to reach locals explicitly: “Ultimately, this project addresses all people who want to be mobile in German road traffic – locals as well as immigrants.” The app is available in 13 different languages for free download for android Rios.

“Emergency assistance”

In the “Emergency Help” application, users can store their emergency data such as blood group, emergency contacts, allergies, or medication. In an emergency, the app contacts pharmacies, doctors, and hospitals and provides them with the location of the accident. “Emergency Help” is available as a free download, but in order to use its full range of functions, users must unlock the premium version for 3.99 euros. Then the stored data can be retrieved despite the locked screen and access to medication reminders, medicine cabinets, vaccinations, allergies, quick access widgets and travel functions with voice translators can be activated. “Emergency Help” is available for Android and iOS.
